Covering Decks and Tops

layers, slit them lengthwise while they are still green, knock off this split tube when it is hard, and finish the laminate without a mandrel.

You can build an integral flange on one end of a drain tube and hook the covering right onto it. On the other end you can clamp a drain hose leading to the through-hull. Alternatively, you can make a recess in the wood around the end of a tube and build up a flange around it on which to connect the covering. Of course, through-hulls as well as drain tubes or scuppers can be fabricated the same way. However, a through-hull and a drain should not be all one straight piece between cockpit and hull if there is the probability of movement of the structures that could lead to eventual rupture. Better to have a hose connection between them for flexibility.

On decks that have scuppers cut out through bulwarks or through the stern, it is usually a simple matter to carry the covering from inside through to the outside, and then turn it onto the hull covering. If the thickness of the laminate tends to restrict a small opening, the opening should be enlarged before it is fiberglassed.
